Devlog #1 - Salamancy is born!
Hey all!
Welcome to my devlog for Salamancy! (maybe working title? This one might stick for once.)
Salamancy is an isometric puzzle game where you place paths to direct Salamander wizards/necromancers to an exit portal.
The game is being made in Game Maker and the art will be hand-drawn.
Why am I making it?? What happened to Craft Realms?
Back in September, I paused working on Craft Realms because of scope creep. I was constantly rescoping to finish the game in my lifetime, but in order to keep the core mechanic of saving rooms from runs, I needed to populate the world with enough enemies / harvestables to make saving rooms feel fun. I wasn't willing to cut the mechanic because that's what made it unique. Working on procedural generation was super fun and rewarding so I'd love to go back to it when I can work on it full time.
I needed to switch and make something smaller, something I could make in a year. I love puzzle games and have always been entranced by games like Cosmic Express and more recently, Railbound.
So I'm taking a spin on the track/path placing puzzle genre! Salamanders. Wizards. Portals. Possibly with the mechanic of dying, reviving, and having salamander skeletons help complete your objective.
I have a GDD made with a list of mechanics that will 100% make it into the game (working on those first!) and a list of mechanics I'm still thinking about, will need to prototype to see if they're fun.
Progress so far:
- I've made an isometric grid that can scale/zoom for different sized puzzles and made all placeholder tiles. Can also toggle to a Cartesian view that will only be for development.
Next steps:
- Start implementing path placing logic so paths connect and fork.
- Add static paths, forks, and obstacles.
- Simulation. Get the salamanders walking along the paths.
Thanks for reading! Would love to hear your thoughts!!
